In the road not taken he talks about roads, interpreting them as decisions we make throughout life and how these decisions take us to different situations and circumstances. One of themes of the Road not taken by Robert Frost is the innocence of a human being and the loss in life, and decisions that marks our life. Another interpretation, due to some symbolisms in the poem suggest that Frost felt that his life was ending, therefore reflecting on his lost opportunities. For instance, he could refer to never going to university and gaining a degree. He is reflecting on the many choices he made throughout his life, and wondering how different would his life be if he had made other decisions (taken other roads). The poem theme is indecision, which can be related to Robert Frost’s age at the time he wrote it. He then returned in 1915, at the age of 41 and one year later wrote his masterpiece “The Road Not Taken”. By doing this, he managed to publish his work overseas, becoming popular in America. Frost suffered from financial and economic difficulties until he decided to move to England (United Kingdom) when he was 38 years old. ![]() He moved to New England (Massachusetts) as a child after his father’s death. As the speaker talks about lost opportunities, metaphorically he is reflecting on his life choices, and how they are going or have affected his life. However, as it is “the road not taken”, the poem focuses on lost opportunities, which is, perceptibly, the road that the speaker did not take. If the title meant the road less traveled the poem would have a stranger focus in non-conformity, which is taking the path that others don’t take. It is imperative to understand that the title is does not mean, as often mistaken, “the road less travelled”, it is “the road not taken”. The title of the poem is the key to its interpretation.
